What were the challenges to be solved and what specific benefits were achieved?

The application of smart glasses in our SAP environment makes it possible to improve working processes, because wearables for production and logistics offer unused potentials for optimization and digitalization of working processes. The experiences of this implementation also help for other projects in future.

“The control of Lean-Lifts® by smart glasses via a selfmade SAP-App is an absolute innovation which did not exist like this before. The smart glasses are not only used for display storage and removal, but also for generating movement commands for Lean-Lifts® via SOAP-interface.” Malte Sietz, Head of Intralogistics

How can the Industrie 4.0 approach be described?

MAN Diesel & Turbo already uses mobile scanners in storage. The data is transferred online to SAP. When using smart glasses, the employees have both hands free during commissioning. Additionally the warehouse lifts are directly controlled via smart glasses.

What could be achieved?

The implementation of smart glasses into the present system landscape as well as the direct control of warehouse lifts improve the process flow. Futhermore, the specially developed SAP app contributes to optimizing intuitive working processes with wearables.

What measures have been taken to achieve the solution?

At an early stage, MAN Diesel and Turbo SE took advantage of the opportunity to gain experience with data glasses in a productive environment. During the project working processes were implemented according to lean principals by logistics, group IT and the start-up NxtBase. The harmonization of working system, hardware and software makes it possible to work without additional input devices. Employees were involved in the planning phase at an early stage.

What can others learn from it?

The open exchange between all project partners as well as the group's internal communication via social platforms offered a good knowledge transfer. It was important that experts were directly linked and everyone was open minded for new ideas.
