The Plattform Industrie 4.0 and the Industrial Internet Consortium have drawn up a road map with which to sound out the interplay between the two architecture models RAMI (the Reference Architecture Model for Industrie 4.0) and IIRA (Industrial Internet Reference Architecture), with the aim of ensuring the future interoperability of the systems. From the beginning, the thematic emphasis has been on standardisation and common test environments.

The starting point for this collaboration was the first major cooperation meeting of the two platforms in 2016. At a further meeting in Zürich the same year, representatives of the platforms then agreed on a common road map. At the SAP headquarters in Walldorf / St. Leon-Rot, more than 300 experts got together for another joint workshop in the autumn of 2016, with the emphasis on testing Industrie 4.0 applications in special test environments. The joint task group 'Testbeds', specially convoked to tackle this topic, elaborated some concrete ideas about how international test environments can be configured jointly. In particular, the focus was on amenities for small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs). At the Hannover Messe in 2017 the first joint demonstration was organised with the aim of looking at industrial Internet security, interoperability and collaboration.

In 2017 the Plattform Industrie 4.0 and the IIC also organised the IIoT World Tour together. On the tour, the platform and the IIC present their results to local protagonists and promote international and inter-enterprise exchange on Industrie 4.0. Regional partners were involved on each stage of the tour.

On the first stage, on 19 June 2017, more than 120 interested parties got together in Turin and discussed key issues of a digitised industry with international experts, such as standardisation, testbeds and IT security. Partners of this event were the Italian initiative Piano Impresa 4.0 and the enterprise Comau S.p.A.

The second event was held on 15 September 2017 in Singapore, attracting well over 250 interested parties. Together with the local partners A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) and the German-Singaporean Chamber of Commerce, an exchange of ideas on the topics of security, testbeds and standardisation was organised.

At the third meeting on 8 December 2017, over 150 representatives from all over the world convened in San Francisco to discuss current developments in the field of Industrie 4.0. Together with the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) and the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), the Plattform Industrie 4.0 and the IIC welcomed the participants to exciting keynote lectures and panel discussions on all aspects of standardisation, security and testbeds.
