The new Plattform Industrie 4.0 was launched with new actors and additional core topics at the Hannover Messe trade fair in April. The platform’s committees got to work quickly and its new working groups met for the first time on June 3rd. On the same day, the members of the working groups and interested representatives from politics, science, civil society and business gathered to celebrate the inauguration of the platform’s administrative office.

The day began industriously with the platform’s working groups meeting for the first time before all of the platform’s participants were invited to attend the opening function in the evening. Five working groups composed of representatives from companies, works councils, trade unions and associations assembled to cover all of the key issues related to Industrie 4.0, namely the working groups on reference architectures, standards and standardisation; research and innovation; security of networked systems; the legal framework; and work, education and training. These initial meetings focussed primarily on defining the topics to be covered by each working group more closely, agreeing to a common schedule, and setting milestones for the current year. The result was a specific work programme which will be taken up by the individual groups in the coming weeks.

The grand opening of the office took place after the working group conference. Wolfgang Scheremet, director-general for industrial policy at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, extended a warm welcome to the members of the platform and the many invited guests. The platform director, Henning Banthien, then introduced himself and outlined to those present the role of the administrative office and the way it will cooperate with the platform’s other organs. This was followed by a get-together where the participants had the opportunity to meet each other before the upcoming work phase. Even though Germany is already the leader in Industrie 4.0 in Europe, one thing was clear and especially after the working group conference: The members of Plattform Industrie 4.0 have plenty to do!
