By commitment at G20 level, Germany wanted to put the topic of Industrie 4.0 on the agenda of the 20 leading industrialised nations, promoting an exchange with the responsible ministries and the initiatives for the implementation of digitisation projects. The Plattform Industrie 4.0 has made a contribution to this exchange, discussing questions on many aspects of framework conditions, standards and success factors worldwide.

In December 2016, Germany assumed the presidency of G20 and brought the topic of Industrie 4.0 to the fore. An initial connectivity conference of the Industrie 4.0 initiatives was held in Berlin on 16-17 March 2017. More than 500 representatives of the G20 nations from politics, the economy and civil society met up in the capital. As the initiative of the host country, the Plattform Industrie 4.0 contributed to the conference planning and participated on numerous panels.
