What challenges were there to solve?

We developed the NCC1701 interface for our i4.0 box to enable Industry 4.0 applications as open source software. Manufacturers of industrial machines still rely primarily on proprietary formats. However, machine monitoring is about the unrestricted availability of cross-plattform data.

What were the concrete benefits?

With the interface, we were already able to meet numerous requirements for projects for the acquisition of machine data. We also have our own projects, e.g. Alarm escalation implemented for our customers.

How can the Industrie 4.0 approach be described?

i4.0-Box meets the highest requirements of Industry 4.0 communication, data transfer and security between companies and machine networks in practice:

  • LAN & WLAN, VPN, firewall, security
  • Email / SMS in the event of an alarm
  • Remote desktop / remote access, cloud solutions

What could be achieved in concrete terms?

i4.0 box as a universal solution for networking industrial machines. The Mazak-CNC machine interface (name: NCC1701) enables us to collect numerous machine data (MDE) from the machine. With the help of this interface, it was possible for our customer MOSCA (awarded with "100 locations for Industry 4.0" prize) to enable the following requirement: "Call & SMS in the event of an alarm" on the machine. MOSCA is about to implement unmanned / fully automated production in the company. For this, the challenge was to receive a notification which the MOSCA on-call employee (worker) should receive. However, it was essential for MOSCA to receive a message that can be acknowledged and additional information when the machine is at a standstill. This means that the MOSCA worker should confirm receipt of the alarm message and this confirmation can be documented with (time stamp). These requirements were met by i4.0-Simon Wotton with business partner Reiner Rusnak in a function specially developed for MOSCA.

What measures were taken to achieve the solution?

The basis is the i4.0 box (hardware) which enables connectivity to the machine and the Internet / LTE network. Based on this we developed the NCC1701 interface which extracts the machine data from the machine. Then the option "SMS / call on alarm" which the i4.0-Box + NCC interface uses to implement the alarm escalation for the customer.

What can others learn from it?

We are working to establish and implement the open source philosophy in industry. We hope to inspire other companies (especially CNC machine manufacturers themselves) to open up and implement proprietary formats in open source concepts through our approach to the topic.
