Layer 1 – Cloud-Edge Infrastructure

The backbone of the 8ra initiative is the underlying cloud-edge infrastructure. It connects centralised, scalable cloud resources with decentralised edge nodes, enabling data processing close to the source. Scalable networks, high bandwidth and low latency create an efficient, secure and flexible foundation for a wide range of applications. Particular emphasis is placed on the sustainability and efficiency of the infrastructure – through integration with renewable energy generation and the use of waste heat.

Layer 2 – Cloud-Edge Functionalities

Infrastructure federation is at the heart of the multi-provider cloud-edge continuum. Intelligent load distribution, automated scaling and seamless integration of different systems enable optimised use of the infrastructure. This is supported by core functions such as data management, synchronisation and analysis between cloud and edge. This ensures that resources are used efficiently and lays the foundation for innovative services.

Layer 3 – Services and Tools

A robust ecosystem of services unlocks the capabilities of the infrastructure to enable the rapid and secure deployment of applications. Fully configurable, modular services ensure seamless delivery across the multi-provider cloud-edge continuum. These include unified data access across various cloud and edge environments, AI-driven capabilities, and service orchestration tools for efficient application management. Together, these services accelerate development, reduce complexity, and promote interoperability between different platforms and devices.

Layer 4 – Advanced Applications

The 8ra Initiative enables forward-looking applications across various industries. The decentralized and federated cloud-edge architecture forms the foundation for innovation. A key focus is on ensuring the transferability of industry-specific solutions to other sectors, promoting the reusability of components, and integrating with existing technologies. In this way, the 8ra Initiative provides crucial support for the digital transformation of European industry.

Application ExampleAI in Manufacturing

When deployed on production lines, humanoid robots are supported by a networked, intelligent infrastructure. This includes the flexible allocation of computing resources, the secure transmission of data with low latency, the collection and distribution of AI training data, and support for agentic and industrial AI systems.
