Three Pathways to a Sustainable Industry 4.0
Germany’s Plattform Industrie 4.0 presents practice examples and pathways towards a resource-efficient and carbon neutral Industrie 4.0
Re-manufacturing, Lifecycle Management and Sustainable Twin - the Plattform Industrie 4.0 presents initial practical applications and development potential of a sustainable Industrie 4.0 at the German Federal Government's Digital Summit 2020. The Plattform is also working on a Charter for Work and Learning in Industrie 4.0, which aims at the social sustainability of tomorrow’s work and training. Through the GAIA-X project, the Industrial Digital Twin Association and as a driving force behind the implementation of Article 35c of Germany’s economic stimulus package, the Plattform is committed to the broad implementation of digital ecosystems.
Sustainability is a fundamental cornerstone of societal values. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the visible consequences of climate change, it is increasingly the focus of public debate. The "Transformation Project Industry 4.0" will only be a success if economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainability are all treated as integral parts of the change. For this reason, sustainability is firmly anchored as a line of action in the Mission Statement 2030 of the Plattform Industrie 4.0.
Resource efficiency, transparency, networking - 3 paths to an ecologically sustainable Industrie 4.0
In recent months, the Plattform Industrie 4.0 has compiled and analysed over 60 examples of sustainable, digital manufacturing from companies and research. The collection shows that Industrie 4.0 is already making more resource-efficient and climate-friendly manufacturing possible today. At the same time, the analysis crystallised three development paths towards an ecologically sustainable Industrie 4.0:
Path 1: Reduce consumption, increase impact: towards resource-efficient and carbon neutral, digitalised manufacturing.
Path 2: From mass production to transparent service offerings: how a changed value proposition influences digital business models.
Path 3: Sharing and networking: sustainable digital business means cooperating and acting in circular economic systems (impulse paper/ only available in german at first)
At this year's Digital Summit, which focuses on "Sustainable Digital Living", our experts will discuss the results of the Plattform with distinguished guests (30 November from 15:15 in Forum A).
The Charter - a foundation of values for the world of work 4.0
The transition to a digitalised industry and the associated "skill shift" can only succeed with an evolution of working structures and methods of training and qualification. In the Plattform Industrie 4.0, personnel and education managers, works councils and social partners are therefore currently jointly developing a "Charter for Learning and Working in Industrie 4.0". The charter is intended to help companies and employees collectively shape the transformation of Industrie 4.0 along the three dimensions 'people', 'technology' and 'organisation'. Our experts will give first insights into the charter on 30 November from 15:15 in Forum A.
Data infrastructure and open standards - the basis of the Digital Green Economy
For Industrie 4.0 to develop its full potential - also in terms of sustainability - broad implementation is required while generating large amounts of interoperable data that can be securely stored and intelligently used. The Plattform is therefore committed to the GAIA-X project for a secure and networked data infrastructure based on European values.
The Plattform also co-initiated the foundation of the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA). The association further develops the industrial digital twin as an open source solution and brings it to the market. Finally, the Plattform is committed to the broad implementation of Industrie 4.0 in key sectors. The Plattform's Task Force 35c provides impetus for the implementation of the programme "Investments in the future of the vehicle industry" within the framework of item 35c of the German government's economic stimulus package - taking into account GAIA-X, the digital twin and concepts of sustainable mobility.
About Plattform Industrie 4.0
The Plattform Industrie 4.0 is the central network in Germany for the advancement of digital transformation towards Industrie 4.0. In close cooperation with politics, industry, science, associations and trade unions, over 300 stakeholders from 159 organisations are actively involved in the platform. The platform develops and coordinates information and networking services to raise awareness of Industrie 4.0 solutions among companies and deploy them on-site. As one of the largest international and national networks, it supports German companies – particularly medium-sized companies – in implementing Industrie 4.0. It provides companies with decisive impulses through examples of company practice from across Germany and makes concrete recommendations for action and test environments. The platform’s numerous international cooperation underscores its leading role in international discussions on Industrie 4.0.
