From Smart Factories to B2B Platforms
Plattform Industrie 4.0 lays the foundations for the next phase of Industrie 4.0
Introduction
The platform economy is an opportunity for German industry. Its unique manufacturing know-how gives it a strong advantage in the use and creation of B2B platforms. In order to transform this advantage into success, Plattform Industrie 4.0 is working in an international network to lay the necessary groundwork: It supported the birth of the Project GAIA-X, presented by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier at the Digital Summit as a distributed and open data infrastructure. The Plattform provides additional support to companies so that they can implement their own digital business models – in the form of examples, recommendations and an Industrie 4.0 digital twin.
Using B2B platforms – the next phase of Industrie 4.0
Digital technologies have arrived on the factory shop floor. Now it is time for Industrie 4.0 to move into its next phase: The combination of data and artificial intelligence mean that new services and business models are now possible. Especially when using and developing B2B platforms, the German industry can benefit from its industry-specific expertise and gain new market share. However, the framework conditions must be just right – data infrastructure, security and interoperability are essential – for the emergence of a new digital ecosystem (see the2030 Vision of the Plattform Industrie 4.0). The Plattform and its partners are setting out the central foundations.
Autonomy for an innovative SME sector
The industrial SME sector will invest in digital business models and share sensitive data with its partners if the surrounding environment is secure. This is why Plattform Industrie 4.0 initiated a project for the establishment of aEuropean data infrastructurewhich takes into account the needs of SMEs. The project is now supported by wide selection of partners and stands on its own feet. The Plattform Industrie 4.0’s actors play an intensive role in the shaping of this process, as industry will be of central importance to its application in practice.
Secure and interoperable data
Security creates trust and enables the exchange of sensitive data. Plattform Industrie 4.0 developssecurity solutionsfor Industrie 4.0 in cooperation with international partners and carries them over into pilot projects. In order to analyse machine data using artificial intelligence, large quantities of high-quality data need to be aggregated. For this purpose, Plattform Industrie 4.0 developed the administration shell as the basis of digital twins for Industrie 4.0. The projects “Networked Administration Shells” and “Regulatory Testbed” further the application of these concepts.
Examples and Recommendations for Business Models
Alongside the technical requirements for digital value creation, companies need recommendations they can implement. Plattform Industrie 4.0 providespractical examples, identifies basic patterns and the micro and macroeconomic impact of data-driven business models. In addition, it analyses theorganisational requirementsthat accompany digital business models.
About Plattform Industrie 4.0
