Many experts are currently dedicating themselves to approaching the DPP from an international angle, thus making a contribution to a modern and digital international quality infrastructure system. Exemplary projects such as Recommendation 49 by UNECE/CEFACT and the accompanying EU project by DG INTPA Enhancing Transparency and Traceability for Sustainable Value Chains in Strategic Sectors for the Green and Digital Transitions in the UNECE region and beyond (phase III), which will be covered in the publication, have the potential to deliver essential components for the global application of digital product passports.

However, in their present form, these projects are also an example of projects that are clearly incompatible with the work ongoing at the European Commission (COM) that is intended to implement the European Green Deal and with the standardisation work being undertaken by the Technical Committees at CEN and CENELEC on behalf of COM with the aim of its implementation. The publication proposes, from a technical perspective, as to how the potential of these projects could be harnessed in line with the work being undertaken at European level and with the overarching principles of technology neutrality, the control of data, and interoperability.
