Manufacturing-X Guidance Board

Introduction

The Manufacturing-X Guidance Board is part of the Manufacturing-X initiative and consists of appointed representatives from a selected group of Manufacturing-X projects and associated projects. It is moderated and led by the project Factory-X.

The MX Guidance Board ensures that all participating projects are contributing to the creation of one compatible and interoperable digital ecosystem across industries, that participating projects not overlapping, and that the resulting ecosystem is operated by one or more interoperable operating entities.

Our vision: interoperability across industries

Participation in Manufacturing-X brings clear advantages for industrial companies. However, most companies are engaged across traditional industry boundaries. Let’s use the example of “Small Motors Inc” – a fictional yet typical industrial company that participates in many of these digital ecosystems.

For them, interoperability means:

  • They are part of only one governing body (if any).
  • They will have to register, identify and authenticate only once to be able to collaborate with any other company in any of the participating digital ecosystems and to access the resources (app store) of all digital ecosystems.
  • They will have to model their data only once for a given use case.
  • They will have to use only one set of core protocols (e.g. connectors).
  • Use cases addressing the same goals (e.g. Product Carbon Fotoprint management) are as identical as possible across all data ecosystems, so that companies only need to use one set of processes across industries.

Key tasks of the Manufacturing-X Guidance Board

To achieve the stated goals, the Manufacturing-X Guidance Board will:

  • Identify

    Identify

Analyze the participating projects for overlap including the risks of incompatibility and redundancy.

  • Prioritize

    Prioritize

Identify alignment potentials and sort them for expected impact to reach the stated goals.

  • Evaluate

    Evaluate

Structure and compare options for each alignment potential.

  • Decide

    Decide

Draw up a joint way to move forward together across all alignment potentials.

  • Communicate

    Communicate

Create transparency regarding the degree of alignment of all Manufacturing-X projects and all decisions taken by the Manufacturing-X Guidance Board.

  • Advocate

    Advocate

Create transparency about the technology, administrative, and organizational approaches how to becoming Manufacturing-X compliant and interoperable for a broad audience to inform potential upcoming projects.

  • Cooperate

    Cooperate

Team-up with other standardization initiatives such as Gaia-X, Catena-X, IDTA, ISO, IEC etc. to reuse what is already established.

Current Topic Groups

To achieve these goals, experts of all projects are working together in dedicated Topic Groups that focus on specific aspects of cross-dataspace interoperability. The aim is to find interoperable solutions for the common technological base layer, align their approaches in the implementation of cross-industry use cases, and coordinate on dataspace operation and governance. As such, current Topic Groups include groups working on the technological foundation (e.g. TG Data Exchange, TG Test Environment, TG e2e Security Architecture, TG Asset Data Modelling), groups focusing on specific use cases (e.g. TG Collaborative Engineering, TG Circularity, TG Product Carbon Footprint), and groups regarding other overarching aspects (e.g. TG Governance).
