The future of industry – Made in Germany

Industry is both the backbone of the German economy and a strong foundation for the impending digitisation of industrial manufacturing. Industrie 4.0 will enable mass production according to individual customer requirements and lead to new business models and new perspectives for employees. The framework for this structural change must be designed to strengthen German industry. Plattform Industrie 4.0 is tasked with drawing up relevant recommendations for action and demonstrating with example applications how industrial manufacturing can be digitised successfully in practice.

What is Industrie 4.0?

Screws communicate with assembly robots, driverless forklifts store goods in a high-bay racks, intelligent machines coordinate their own manufacturing processes, people, machines and products are directly linked to each other, decisions are made in real-time: a fourth industrial revolution has begun.

From smart objects and networked machines back to people

The use of digital technologies in the manufacturing sector amounts to a revolution: It is increasingly becoming clear what positive developments result from it and which developments require a second critical view, in particular so that the humans do not get out of focus.

Promoting the digitisation of industry through dialogue

Industrie 4.0 is a complex undertaking. It affects many and often overlapping fields of activity. The following pages describe the fields which require decisions to be made by politicians and industrial actors. To this effect, Plattform Industrie 4.0 is drawing up recommendations for action through dialogue with all social stakeholders.
